WE HONEYLOVE ...
Sarah Culberson, Co-author of A PRINCESS FOUND

Sarah Culberson, a young biracial woman, always knew she was adopted. A year after her birth she was brought into the home of a loving white family from West Virginia and was raised in the United States – with no knowledge of the birthparents that had given her up. Eventually, Sarah grew curious about her past. When she found out that her white birthmother was dead, she hired a private investigator to track down her biological father. Sarah found much more than just a father – she discovered that he was a descendent of African royalty.

Growing up, Sarah Culberson struggled with issues of identity during her adolescence and especially in college. She would never have guessed what the truth of her past would unfold for her future. Sarah discovered that she was related to African royalty, a ruling Mende family in Sierra Leone, and that she was considered a mahaloi, the grandchild of one of Sierra Leone's 149 Paramount Chiefs with the status of a princess.

What followed is an unforgettably emotional journey of self-discovery. As Sarah forges a relationship with her father, she also begins to connect the people of Bumpe, Sierra Leone, with communities throughout North America. A PRINCESS FOUND is an intimate revelation of her quest to find her biological father, a searchthat takes her across the world to meet him, and the chiefdom she could one day call her own.

Let's hear from Sarah...in her own words:

What has been the most interesting thing you've learned about yourself and/or your family during this journey?
I've learned that there is so much that I didn't know about myself and my family. And I realize that I never would have discovered any of these glorious and heartbreaking details, had this book not been written.  Opening up the past is not always enjoyable, however, there are many magical elements to it that we might never be know unless we go on the journey.

Before you settled on A Princess Found, what other titles did you consider?
The Green Dress and  Journey to Bumpe were among the ideas.

What are a few of your favorite childhood memories, and why?
Going to TCBY (a frozen yogurt place) with my mom before every ballet class.

Going cross country skiing with my dad at Coopers Rock in West Virginia. Then going back to the car and drinking hot chocolate from the silver thermos to get warmed up.

I also loved snow days! On the east coast snow days capture some of my fondest memories.  There are no snow days here in LA but in West Virginia I spent my snow days with one of my best friends Amy. Just in case you don't know,  "snow days" are when there is soooo much snow outside that school is canceled and kids get to have fun at home, go sled ridding, or dance around the kitchen and make brownies.
Amy and I had the time of our lives on snow days. We would go to her kitchen and make brownies, and dance through the kitchen, down the hall and into the living room to the music to West Side story.  We'd sing the lyrics of the songs at the top of our lungs. "I want to live in America, you want to live in America, we want to live in America, everyone lives in America!"
We held our wooden spoons doused with chocolate brownie batter and used them as microphones while eating the yummy chocolate batter and dancing through the kitchen.  We thought we were on Broadway! Then we'd watch Disney movies as we gobbling, gigantic, gooey brownies followed by a  glasses of milk.

What's your favorite thing to do when you're not working on your art?  Or in your spare time?

My favorite thing in the world to do is to go salsa dancing with my friends!!!!!
I also like to go bike riding with Von and Hana!

What 3 things would you absolutely have to take if you were going to be stuck on a desert island, Survivor style.
Water, chocolate, Afro cuban salsa music

What's your favorite guilty pleasure?  Icream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What can we not tell by looking at you?  That I eat a lot of sweets!

Do you have any hidden talents?
I'm make a mean a chocolate chip cookie

What's your favorite quote or saying? Never give up on your dreams!

What celebrity would you like to meet? What would you ask them? Rosa Parks.  I would ask her what went through her mind before she sat down in the front seat of the bus.

Where's the farthest you traveled? What is your fondest memory about that place?
Sierra Leone, West Africa.  The fondest memory about Sierra Leone is the smiles and the giggles of the beautiful children.

Why should we hear you story / buy your book? I think this book hits different topics that relate to all of us. The topics range from forgiveness, perseverance, love, family, a tragic 11-year Civil war, adoption, not looking like everyone else and trying to figure out where to fit in, reunion of families, taking a huge risk and not knowing what would come next, rejection, believing in yourself, men and women trying to save their lives a their country was being taken over, rebuilding after everything is taken from you, letting go of the anger toward ones father and allowing there to be peace, overcoming fears, having dreams come true..... This is book goes on a journey from a small town in West Virginia to a small town in West Africa and it has something in it for everyone.

Lastly, Please Speak Freely, anything else you'd like to say or share go ahead...
